About

Saudade Collective

The origin of Saudade Collective lies in my love for art, culture, craft and storytelling. I travel to immerse myself in other cultures. Look at art to get inspired. Tell hidden stories and cherish my heirlooms for the memories they hold.

I (Valerie) founded Saudade Collective to create a counter voice. A sound against mass production and thus – in my eyes – against the despiriting of a product. During the years that I worked in the interior design industry, I saw how collections of major brands are created. These companies travel the world in search of special designs, which are then copied and put into mass production. The first time I saw this process up close was an eye opener. In my view, the design, the maker (and with that a beautiful craft) were disregarded. Would consumers know that this is how it works, I wondered. And if they knew, wouldn’t they rather make a different choice? I delved further and discovered that usually there is little to be found about the origin of interior products. Surely it shouldn’t be that difficult for a consumer to choose beautiful and fair?

Our Collectables

With a collection that is not only produced fairly and sustainably, but is also beautiful and unique in shape, material and creation, Saudade Collective tells a different narrative. We create collectables that you, as the owner, enjoy not only because they look beautiful, but also because they are made in a beautiful way. You know that the objects originated from the craft of a maker, who made the object by hand under good conditions and for a living income.

The creation of the Saudade Collectables starts with me, I am the connecting factor between creation process and product. I want to make connections: what happens when I bring cultures, crafts and artisans together? Every Collectable is an answer to that question. I look for and approach talents with different (cultural) backgrounds who inspire me and whose vision is in line with mine. Together we design and search for the most beautiful shapes, colors and materials. That, and the fact that the Collectables are handmade, makes our collections unique.

To me, the story of the maker and his/her product is an essential part of Saudade Collective. Besides the fact that I want to be transparent about, for example, material choices, I want to share my love for makers and the craft by including you in the making process. Meet the artisans, in words and images, and discover their passion but also their struggles. What journey preceded the moment that you got hold of this object?

Our Collective

The designers and artisans of Saudade form a collective. Together we share a mission: to create sustainable and artisanal products. Saudade Collective offers a stage where everyone has a place. Where the product is enriched by a visible creation process, in which the soul of the artisan remains intact. This collective of like-minded people also benefits you. At Saudade Collective you can purchase with peace of mind. Our collections are sustainable, honest and handmade, based on passion and love for the craft and the world.

Conscious Entrepreneurship

I believe in conscious entrepreneurship. This means that I always research what options there are, in order to be able to make informed decisions. For me, conscious entrepreneurship is inextricably linked to positive impact. Or at the very least, neutral impact. So the choices I make do not have a negative effect on anything or anyone else. For example, not only the collections, but also the packaging and shipping materials are sustainable and fully recyclable.

My aim is not so much to develop collections with the label ‘sustainable’. However, I would like to see the collections bring about a change in the mindset of the consumer. I hope Saudade Collective can make you aware of the creation process of a product, so that your appreciation for these handmade creations will increase and you will cherish your Collectables. This makes Saudade Collective’s collection pieces sustainable.
